There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Miles Morale s since he became Spider-Man, and a not-insignificant amount of that controversy surrounds his father and his name, Jefferson Davis. While the fact that Miles Morales’ father shared a name with the President of the Confederate States was deeply uncomfortable, that has officially changed.
Jefferson’s son, Miles, has his mother’s last name, which is Morales, instead of his father’s last name, which is Davis. Jefferson Davis shared a name with the President of the Confederate States of America.
Jefferson Davis had his name legally changed to Jefferson Morales in the comics. The Davis name was associated with crime and, as a police officer, he wanted to distance himself from that name – particularly as he was a former employee of the Kingpin working undercover for SHIELD. He also didn’t want his son associated with the Davis name.
As for not picking his father’s last name, a possible explanation is given in the Miles Morales novel by Jason Reynolds: Miles shrugged. “Back in the day, my pops and my uncle did enough dirt in their lives to make Davis a bad word in some circles. I look just like them both and live in the same neighborhood, so, I don’t know, I wonder”
When was Miles Morales pardoned?
He was captured by Union forces in 1865. Imprisoned expecting trial for treason, he was pardoned in 1868 by Johnson. So it was a curious decision for Brian Michael Bendis t o give that name to Miles Morales’s father, the new Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe, back in the days of Ultimate Spider-Man. Who is Jefferson Davis?

Characteristics. Officer Davis is a middle-aged African-American man with a bald head and slim physique. He is always seen wearing his police uniform. Davis is shown to be a selfless and good-natured individual who in many ways embodies the ideal cop.

Officer Davis is called to the scene of a shipyard owned by Fisk in order to assist Spider-Man in his investigation. Together, the two unlock the secrets hidden inside, coming up against the Inner Demons who are attempting to steal equipment. Davis helps in their eventual apprehension, but is injured in the process.
Davis was born in New York City around the year 1974. Not much of his past is known besides that he had a brother named Aaron. He began working for the NYPD around 2001, and had a son named Miles with his wife Rio Morales around 2003. According to Yuri Watanabe, Officer Davis had been investigating Wilson Fisk ‘s activities for years.
In the comics, Jefferson Davis first appeared in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man vol. 2 #1 (November 2011).
Legacy. His Family moved back to their old home, Harlem. Peter felt regret not saving him, knowing that the police saved his life when he was Spider-Man. Wanting to make up for it, Peter asked his aunt, May to let Miles work at F.E.A.S.T. when Rio Morales asked Peter to.
The Inner Demons, led by Mister Negative, arrive, with a number of them carrying explosives. When the Deputy Mayor is revealed to be one of them and tries to detonate his bomb in the crowd, Davis tackles him and shields other officers on guard using his body, sacrificing his life to protect the crowd.
