It is based on the true storey of Abigail Hernandez, who was kidnapped on October 9, 2013, in North Conway, New Hampshire. Abigail AKA Abby was a Kennett High School student who resided in the village with her mother, Zenya, and sister, Sarah.

In the afternoon of October 9th 2013, Abigail “Abby” Hernandez was walking to her house after school and texting back and forth with her classmates on departing buses, when the 15-year-old’s cell phone suddenly shut off.
The heavily-redacted document further indicates that the defendant’s been charged with repeated sexual assault of a minor, unlawful restraint, and custodial interference, among dozens and dozens of equally repugnant acts which sprung from the Hernandez abduction.

Abby Hernandez was just 14 years old when she vanished without a trace while walking home from her school in North Conway, New Hampshire, on Oct. 9, 2013. For nine months, Abby’s disappearance left her family, investigators and the community mystified.
She called Kibby and told him she had given him up to authorities. “So, I told him, ‘Whatever you’re ——- making in your damn basement, you better clean it up right now, because they are coming for your a–,” Munday told “20/20.”. Kibby made Abby promise not to reveal his identity to anyone.
Ultimately, in July 2014, Kibby released her out of fear that police were about to visit his home due to a counterfeiting investigation.
Like, everybody makes mistakes…. If you let me go, I won’t tell anybody about this.’. I really always kinda put it– you know, ‘This strategy is always there.’”. Abby said her captor slowly became more trusting of her, even enlisting her to help him create counterfeit money in his home, she said.

He is serving a prison sentence of 45 to 90 years outside of New Hampshire. Though Abby says her captivity altered her life, she has also come to appreciate the new outlook on life it has afforded her. “Every time I go outside now, I really try to appreciate sunlight and fresh air,” said Abby.
But her initial attempts to negotiate with her abductor were unsuccessful, and she was driven to his property where she spent much of the next nine months in the container. Even as she suffered daily abuse, Abby kept hope alive by praying for the strength to survive her ordeal.

Slowly yet surely, because she went along with everything that he wanted to do, Abby’s captor started trusting her, even enlisting her to help him create counterfeit money. Then, he gave her some of his books to read, from where she found out his name – Nate Kibby.
Abby walked the remaining one mile to her mother’s home , and a week later, after she told investigators Nate’s exact name and location, they stormed his place and arrested him.
As per the last reports, though, Abby still resides in North Conway, New Hampshire , and she is still close to her family, happy to be with them and have her freedom.
And it’s true. It turned out that Abby had been kidnapped. She had accepted a ride from a stranger and had asked him to drop her off at a restaurant near her place, but when he said that he needed to make a stop at Home Depot first, she knew she was in danger.
